Western Canada Women's Cricket Championship - Team BC

On September 5/6 the Alberta Cricket Association hosted the 6th annual Western Canadian Women’s Cricket Championships. For the first time in its history, the tournament was recognized and supported by Cricket Canada, and Manzoor Chaudhry, Chief selector of the Canadian Cricket team was in attendance.

Team BC was made up of representatives from the three main women’s teams in the region – The Fine Legs of West Vancouver, Meralomas of Vancouver and the Wicket Maidens of Victoria. The BC team travelled to Calgary full of confidence with 5 current and former members of the national team in the ranks.

Unfortunately, the early September weather proved to be uncooperative and Saturday’s play was completely washed out. Undeterred, the Alberta Cricket Association were able to secure an indoor field facilitating a modified tournament for Sunday. Team BC adapted fastest to the adjusted format with a dominant display in the first match. The second game proved to be a lot closer with a much improved performance from team Alberta that came down to the final over. Team BC held their nerve and superior fire power with the bat and some tight bowling secured victory and an overall tournament success with 2 wins to zero.

Captain Chrissie Blackadder gratefully accepted the tournament trophy on behalf of the girls with Jaimie Veale and Joanna White also receiving honours for best bowler and best batter respectively.

With the new interest of Cricket Canada in the tournament, we look forward to bigger and better events with more opportunities for Team BC to demonstrate their talents into the future. Congratulations to the 2015 team.
